Gervasius and Protasius

Gervase and Protasius of Milan (French Gervais et Protais, English Gervase and Protase; * in the 3rd century, † 300, possibly in Milan ) are two Christian martyrs and saints. The name Gervase means the spear servant ', Protasius, the Leading '.

Vita

Gervase and Protasius probably died together under the Emperor Diocletian around 300 martyred in Milan. More details about their lives and deaths is not known. They should have been the children of Vitalis and Valeria. They should be baptized with her father of Gaius of Milan.

According to legend, Gervase and Protasius were twins the time of Nero. They were captured in Rome, brought to Milan, where Gervase whipped to death with lead flagella and Protasius was beheaded.

Worship

After a dream Ambrose of Milan discovered the bones of the Saint Gervase and Protasius on June 17, 386 in the earlier Basilica of Saints Nabor and Felix. Ambrose had the bones in the church he built near (now Sant'Ambrogio ) transfer, in which he himself was also buried here. The relics of the three saints Ambrose, Gervase and Protasius are now together in the crypt of the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. Other important relics sites are the Basilica of Rapallo and the Cathedral of Città della Pieve (both Santi Gervasio e Protasio ) in Italy, and the cathedrals of Soissons ( Saintes- Gervais- et- Protais ) and Le Mans ( Saint -Julien ) and Sées ( Notre -Dame), and probably earlier in the church at Civaux ( Saintes- Gervais- et- Protais ) in France.

1162 Rainald of Dassel should have brought relics of Saints Gervase and Protasius to Breisach, where there is an appropriate reliquary in the Cathedral.

Patronages

The saints are the patron saints of towns and villages Alpartir (Spain ) Bormio, Breisach am Rhein ( Germany ), Bariano, Città della Pieve, Corte Nova, Domodossola, Marudo, Milan, Novate Milanese, Rouen ( France), Sondrio, Spirano, Torri di Quartesolo, Villalengua (Spain, Sangre de San Gervasio and San Protasio ). He is also the second patron of the Diocese of Lugano ( in the Ambrosian rite ).

They are regarded as the patron saint of children and Heuarbeiter. You are called against theft and for a good hay.

In the Catholic Thomas Christians of India there are several old " Gervase and Protasius churches."
