Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik

The Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics ( GAMM ) is an association for the promotion of scientific work. It was founded in 1922 by engineer Ludwig Prandtl and the mathematician Richard von Mises.

According to the statutes is the responsibility of the GAMM " the maintenance and promotion of scientific work and international cooperation in applied mathematics as well as all sub- fields of mechanics and physics relating to the basics of engineering ." To achieve this goal, the GAMM mainly by the organizing of scientific conferences. In addition, the GAMM publishes the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics ( ZAMM ).

Focus of the work are, inter alia, numerical mathematics, solid mechanics, aerodynamics and fluid mechanics, stochastics, operations research, optimization.

The most important event of the GAMM is held annually in Germany or in neighboring countries, annual meeting, which is mainly visited because of its scientific program of hundreds of scientists. Each year of the Proceedings Volume PAMM appears to conference. In addition, for more meetings on specific fields from the range of disciplines represented in the GAMM instead.

The GAMM annually awards the Richard von Mises Prize to a young scientist for outstanding achievements in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics.

The company has more than 2,000 members. President is Professor Wolfgang Ehlers (University of Stuttgart).
