Geshe Sherab Gyatso

Sherab Gyatsho ( Tib. shes rab rgya mtsho; * 1884 in Amdo in today's Salar Autonomous County Xunhua the southeast of the city Haidong in Qinghai province, † 1968) was a Chinese priest and scholar of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and politicians of Tibetan origin.

Life

As a child, he became a monk at Gori Dratshang monastery, later he continued his studies at Labrang Monastery in Gansu continued. Then he went to Tibet and continued his studies in Lhasa Drepung Monastery continues. He graduated at the age of thirty-two years with the Geshe - Lharampa degrees, the highest Geshe degree. He was involved in the publication of the collected works of Buton Rinchen Drup, the Lhasa Kanjur and the collected works of Desi Sanggye Gyatsho. He was a confidant of the 13th Dalai Lama after his death he left Tibet and joined the Chinese Communists. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was Vice President of the Government of Qinghai Province and Director of the Culture and Education Committee, member of the first and second National People's Congress, the second, third and fourth Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People and president of the Chinese Buddhist Association. At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution he was arrested. He led repeated Chinese Buddhist delegations traveling to Nepal, Cambodia, Burma, Sri Lanka and India. He translated Tsongkhapa's " Lamrim Chenmo " ( " Great Exposition of the step path " ) in which the Mahayana teachings of Nagarjuna and Asanga are grouped into Chinese. His rebirth was found near the Labrang monastery in 1976.
