The upright inflorescence axis grows from the axils of rosette leaves and leafy, the leaves are stängelbürtigen less incised than those of the rosette.

The inflorescence is terminal, sympodial and mostly wenigblütig. The flower cup is bowl- to cup-shaped or reversed cone, an outer calyx is present ( exception: Geum vernum ), its lobes are smaller than the actual sepals, they lie flush against each other or overlap each other slightly. The petals are often yellow, even pink, white, red or purple before coming.

Occasionally, a ( never excellent ) discussion between the numerous stamens (20 to many). Also the stylus are numerous and grow from the base of the flower cup or a cone-shaped or cylindrical ring, the lower part is formed in some species to a Gynophor. At its end, they divide into branches stylus, the bottom of which is extended after flowering, binding and hook-shaped, the upper part, however, falls off. The scars are point-like.

When fruits are formed achenes. The seeds have a membranous shell.

The majority of species hexaploid, the number of chromosomes is 2n = 42, and also 28, 56, 70 and 84 occur.
