Géza Szőcs

Géza Szőcs ( born August 21, 1953 in Târgu Mureş ) is a Romanian- Hungarian writer and politician in both states.

Life

The son of the Romanian-Hungarian writer István Szőcs studied until 1979 at the Babeş -Bolyai University of Cluj. At the suggestion of András Sütő he received 1979/80 a Herder scholarship to the University of Vienna.

After working in the literary seminar of the Babeş -Bolyai University of Cluj Géza Szőcs went from 1986 to 1989 into political exile in Switzerland, where he worked as a journalist in Geneva. Between 1989 and 1990 he headed the Budapest studio of Radio Free Europe. He joined the staff of the magazine Magyar Napló of the Hungarian Writers' Union in 1989.

1990 Szőcs returned to Cluj and was active in the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, for which he sat from 1990 to 1992 in the Romanian Senate. From 1993 to 2010 he was editor of the magazine in Hungary A Dunánál. He was co-editor of the journal Magyar Szemle and a member of the authority of the Hungarian state television Magyar Televízió ( MTV ).

In May 2010 Szőcs of Viktor Orbán as Minister of State for Culture at the Ministry of National Resources ( Miklós Réthelyi ) in the Hungarian Orbán government was appointed.

Géza Szőcs has five children.
