GGPP synthetase ( GGPPSase ) is the enzyme in animals that (IPP ) molecules catalyzes the condensation reaction of several isopentenyl diphosphate with dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP ) to farnesyl diphosphate, two steps in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. A further step towards geranylgeranyl diphosphate ( GGPP ) is possible; GGPP participates in post-translational modification of proteins plays a role in cell apoptosis. In humans GGPPSase is found in all tissues, but is expressed at particularly high levels in the testes.
Catalyzed reactions
⇔ PPi
Isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP ) and dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP ) condense to form geranyl diphosphate.
⇔ ⇔ PPi
Isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP ) and condense to form farnesyl geranyl diphosphate.
