Ghana Congress Party

The Ghana Congress Party ( GCP) was a political party in Ghana today. The founding of the party filed into the independence process of the Gold Coast colony in 1951.

History of establishment

After the division of the United Gold Coast Convention ( UGCC ) due to the forced by Kwame Nkrumah elimination of the younger members and reestablishment of the Convention People's Party (CPP ), formed the remainder of the UGCC along with a smaller group, the National Democratic Party, the Ghana Congress party. The start-up phase was determined by the power struggle between Nii Amaa Ollennu, a barrister, who held the presidency of the National Democratic Party (NDP ) and JB Danquah, the chairman of the UGCC. Secretary General of the party was Saki check. This power struggle between Ollennu Danquah and ended with the temporary retreat of Ollennu from politics in favor of his legal career.

Following this discussion arguing the later Prime Minister of Ghana Kofi Busia Abrefa and Emmanuel Obetsebi - Lamptey, the later founder of the Nationalist Party, the political supremacy. From today's perspective, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP ), the GCP is thus in the political tradition of the first party of Ghana, the United Gold Coast Convention ( UGCC ).

This was preceded by a law of 1957, which came shortly after the independence of Ghana in force and urged all regional, religious or tribal system on Ghana oriented parties almost overnight into illegality. The opposition joined collected together in the UP.
