Ghanjah

A Ghanja or Kotia is a two - or three-masted fast western Arabian pirates and warship, later also a cargo sailing ship in the eastern Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean and off the coast of Saudi Arabia to the Malabar Coast. Ghanjas were leaner and longer then other Dautypen.

On the three-masted Ghanja the main mast was tilted forward, the Bonaventurmast bent aft, the mizzen mast was vertical. All three masts were rigged with trapezoidal Setteesegel on an upper inclined frame. As a trading ship it had a tail resembling the Bagalla and aft mast on a gaff sail. Two-masted Ghanjas that were built mainly since the mid-18th century, had masts with a parallel incident of about 7 °. The sail area was about 300 m2. The hull had a slender shape, the impression was reinforced by a long projecting stem and stern with transom. The overall length was about 30 m, with a length of 15.5 and a waterline of 20.5 m. The Ghanja had a carrying capacity of 70 to 200 t. The relatively lightweight design with low side height of the ships had the low for sailing ships of this size depth of about 2-2.5 m.

Similar Arab ships, but different order of magnitude were trigon, Pattamar and Bagalla.
