Ghassan Zaqtan

Ghassan Zaqtan, زقطان, غسان transcribed Ghassan Zaqtan (* 1954 in Beit Jala, West Bank ) is a Palestinian writer.

Life

Ghassan Khalil Zaqtan Zaqtans father worked for UNRWA and Zaqtan spent his childhood first in Arab refugee camps. The family later moved to the vicinity of Amman. Zaqtan attended a teacher training college in Na'ur and worked as a sports teacher. From 1978 Zaqtan then lived in various places so until 1982 Beirut. In Damascus, where he was given asylum after 1982, he took over the editorship of the literary pages of pälästinensischen newspaper " al - Hurriya ". In Tunisia, it was until the mid- 1990s, together with Ahmad Dahbur the PLO literary magazine " Bayadir " out. In 1994 he moved to Ramallah. He was there in 1998 co-founder of the "House of the seal ." He works as a director of the Literature and Publication Department of the Ministry of Culture of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and is responsible for the literary supplement of the Palestinian daily newspaper " Al- Ayyam ".

In addition to his various occupations bread Zaqtan writes mainly poetry, and published several volumes of poetry. He also wrote several prose, a short novel and several plays and scripts for documentary films and TV productions.

For his translated into English poetry collection Like a Straw Bird It Follows Me, he and his translator Fady Joudah the 2013 Canadian Griffin Poetry Prize. Zaqtan 2013, is on the shortlist for the U.S. Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
