Lazar was born in Avrig ( Freck ). In the village in the south of Transylvania, he attended elementary school, secondary training (high school and university degree) completed Lazar in Sibiu (Hermannstadt), Cluj -Napoca ( Cluj ) and Vienna. A church career was denied him because of his reformist approaches. Therefore, he proposed an academic career and taught in Sibiu theology. Also in this position Lazar fierce criticism and hostility was exposed.

Finally, Lazar had to go to Wallachia, where he worked as a reformer of the local school system. This reform brought both the departure from the Greek language of instruction and the secularization of education in Wallachia and Moldavia. After he fell seriously ill, Gheorghe Lazar spent the last months of his life again in Transylvania.
