Gheorghe Magheru

Gheorghe Magheru (* April 8, 1802 (also 1804) in Bârzeiu de Gilort, Gorj county, † May 23, 1880 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian freedom fighters, general and politician.

Life

The son of Ion and Bălaşa Magheru was born in Bârzeiu de Gilort. Magheru led 1821 Pandur units of Tudor Vladimirescu. In 1848 he emigrated to first to Transylvania and Trieste, and later to Vienna. During his nine years of exile he fought for the independence of Romania. After the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854 he went to Istanbul to establish a Romanian troops fighting against the Tsarist Empire. In 1857 he moved as a deputy of the county of Gorj in the Ad Hoc Assembly and later in the Romanian Parliament. Gheorghe Magheru died 1880.

The Boulevard Gheorghe Magheru in Bucharest was named after him, a stamp of Posta Română dedicated to him.
