Gi Hyeong-do

Gi Hyeong -do ( born February 16, 1960 in Ongjin, Incheon, † March 7, 1989 in Seoul) was a South Korean poet.

Life

Gi Hyeong -do was born on February 16, 1960 in Incheon. His nickname among critics was the personification of the Black ontology and he was one of the most original voices of Korean poetry. His childhood was marked by poverty and extreme poverty, the death of his sister and the serious illness of his father, which has strongly influenced his poetic perspective.

He graduated in foreign policy and diplomatic relations at Yonsei University. While he began working as a reporter for the JoongAng Ilbo, he began to publish poems, which were influenced by powerful individuality and an extremely pessimistic view of the world. Although he died before he gained recognition as a poet, his works are now considered a masterpiece of modern Korean literature. Even fifteen years after his death has not declined Gis public reputation.

A collection of his essays report a short trip ( 짧은 여행 의 기록 ) was published posthumously on his first death Remembrance Day. The Collection The love is gone and I write ( 사랑 을 잃고 나는 쓰네 ) was released on his fifth death anniversary and includes essays in memory of the poet. 1999 Collected Works of Gi Hyeong -do ( 기형도 전집 ) was published. The only band with Gi 's poems A black blade in my mouth ( 입 속의 검은 잎 ) was published posthumously in 1989 and over forty thousand copies have been sold to date. This work expresses the psychology of terror and injustice that is inherent in everyday life. Gi 's poetry explores themes such as poverty, death, alienation and disease with particular warmth and lyrical beauty. Through the painful experiences such as poverty, death and illness in his life, Gi formed a unique sense of the so-called ' grotesque realism ' aesthetic that disturbing and bizarre images used by the impossibility of communication in the modern world and to express the futility of existence in general.

Gi died at just twenty-nine years of a stroke. His body was in the early morning hours of March 7, 1989, found in a theater in Jongno 3-ga, a city district in Seoul. In the theater it is said to have allegedly been a meeting place for homosexuals. However, this topic is highly controversial.
