A small consolation for Gia Machavariani was that in the snatch he won a world championship bronze medal with his performance.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the conditions for winning a medal for Gia Machavariani actually were extremely favorable, because in the heavyweight division was surprisingly none of the strong Russian weightlifter at the start. But he could not fulfill those expectations, because after a mediocre performance for him in the snatch with 185 kg, underwent him in pushing two failed attempts at 220 kg. In the third attempt, he nevertheless increased to 225 kg because he, if he had done this weight, the Olympic bronze medal would have won. But this attempt also went wide and Gia Machavariani remained unplaced without duel performance.
