Gianfranco Ghirlanda

Gianfranco Ghirlanda SJ ( born July 5, 1942 in Rome) is an Italian Roman Catholic theologian, jurist and canonist. By 2010 he was rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

Life

Gianfranco Ghirlanda studied law at the University La Sapienza in Rome and received his doctorate there in 1966. His studies he earned by factory work at Fiat. In 1966 he became a member of the Society of Jesus and studied henceforth at the Pontifical Gregorian University (PUG ) Catholic theology and canon law. In 1973 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders and earned the academic title Bachelor in Theology. In 1975, he earned a licentiate in Canon Law, summa cum laude, and in 1978 received his doctorate with the weighted summa cum laude work in canon law. Ghirlanda taught since 1975 at the Institute of Religious Studies at the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Canon Law of the PUG. In 1986 he became a full professor; 1995 to 2004 he was Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law there. From September 2004 to September 2010 he was rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Furthermore, Gianfranco Ghirlanda consultant to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (since 2003), the Congregation for Bishops (since 1999), the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ( 1993 ), the Congregation for the Clergy (since 1997), the Congregation for institutes of Consecrated Life (since 1987).
