Gibraltar Defence Police

The Gibraltar Defence Police (GDP, English:. Defending police of Gibraltar) is a civilian police authority which is responsible for security and order in facilities of the British Ministry of Defence in Gibraltar. Until 17 December 2009, it was called Gibraltar Services Police ( GSP). The GDP is the equivalent of the Ministry of Defence Police in the UK. Working conditions and salaries correspond to that authority.

The GDP is headed by a Chief Superindentent, who is appointed by the Governor and Commander in Chief of Gibraltar and the Commander of British Forces in Gibraltar ( British Forces Gibraltar ) is a subordinate. Apart from the Chief Superintendent in 2004 it consisted of two Chief Inspectors, six Inspectors, 15 Sergeants, 103 Constables and 16 civilian employees. The relatives of the GDP, as the Ministry of Police Denfence entitled to bear arms.

Since 20 March 1997, it has built a headquarters for them at the naval base HMS Rooke, which it shares with the Joint Provost and Security Unit of the British Army. Since 1998 there is a water protection unit ( Marine Unit), which consists of a Sergeant and more than 20 Constables. She is responsible for the water-side security of naval facilities and supports the Water Police of the Royal Gibraltar Police in their duties on the water. The GDP for this purpose runs several inflatable boats and two 15 m- barges. Furthermore, the GDP supports Gibraltar Co -ordinating Centre for Criminal Intelligence and Drugs through secondment of officials.
