Gidamis Shahanga

Gidamis Shahanga ( born September 4, 1957 in Katesh, Manyara ) is a former Tanzanian athlete who won both the 10,000 -meter run as well in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games.

Career

In the Commonwealth Games 1978 in Edmonton Shahanga won the marathon in 2:15:40 h following year he was in Dakar. During the Athletics Championships in Africa Dakar in 2:36:46 h second with nearly seven minutes behind Kebede Balcha At the Olympic Games in 1980 Shahanga finished in 2:16:47 h the 15th Place. 1982 ranged him at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane 28:10,15 min to win gold ahead of compatriot Zacharia Barie. Five days later, he finished sixth in the marathon.

As a student of the University of Texas at El Paso Shahanga 1983 won the championship of the NCAA, both over 5000 meters and 10,000 meters and won the Grand Prix of Bern. In the sprint decision in the 10,000 meters at the World Championships 1983 in Helsinki Shahanga came in fifth in 28:01,93 min to the finish, with less than a second behind winner Alberto Cova. 1984 won the pre-Olympic marathon Shahanga of Los Angeles and the Rotterdam Marathon. At the Olympic Games in 1984 Shahanga different from the 10,000 m in the flow. The marathon of these games was strongly influenced up to half of Gidamis Shahanga and his compatriot Juma Ikangaa. In 1988, he won the 10,000 -meter run at the East and Central African Championships and finished fourth at the New York Marathon. A year later, he was fourth at the Honolulu Marathon. 1990 won Shahanga the Vienna Spring Marathon and the Greifenseelauf and was at the Berlin Marathon runner-up. 1993 and 1994 won Shahanga the Munich Marathon.

At a height of 1.80 m was Shahangas competition Weight 57 kg. His brother Alfredo Shahanga was also successful as a marathon runner.
