Gierłoż, Kętrzyn County

Gierłoż ( German Görlitz ) is a village in Poland, in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It belongs to the municipality Kętrzyn and is administratively assigned to the mayor's office Czerniki.

Geography

The village is located in northern Poland, approximately 30 kilometers south of the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast. Kętrzyn is located about eight kilometers to the west.

History

The village was laid out in 1353 by Commander Wolfgang von Sauer. Surrounded by moors and lakes laid Sauer here Jagdgut on, so that the nearby fortress of the Teutonic Order in Rastenburg ( Kętrzyn ) was supplied with game. When the plague raged in 1710 in Prussia, died seven inhabitants in the still small Görlitz. In 1907 it was connected to the railway network. After the First World War, the village was a popular destination with the locals catch Petersburg. So here weekend homes, restaurants and pensions developed. 1940, during the Second World War, which began in the immediate vicinity of the village with the work on the Führer's headquarters Wolfsschanze. In January 1945, the Red Army marched into the village. The remains of the Wolf's Lair in 1959 turned into a tourist attraction. Gierłoż was assigned in 1973 to the mayor's office Czerniki.

Traffic

The village is situated on a side road that leads about six kilometers south-east in the Province Road 592. About this also the county seat Kętrzyn is achievable. In Kętrzyn also the next connection is to the rail network.

The nearest international airport on the territory of Poland 's Lech Walesa Airport in Gdansk about 200 kilometers away. The airport is geographically closer to the Kaliningrad airport about 90 kilometers north in the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast.
