History

Early Beginnings

1937, established the basketball department was founded in 1846 within the MTV casting. She is one of the oldest in Germany. In 1939, the team qualified for the finals for the first time at the German Championship. However, due to the Second World War the game operation came to a halt.

In the postwar period, the club started in 1948 again with regular training and won in the same year for the first time Hessen Cup. The team was finally in 1950 in the then highest German league, which split into several groups Serie A, where the Giessen played in the group West ascend. However, it was decided, after just one season due to financial reasons back in the national league return. After you won the Hessen Cup 1953 again, the MTV 1955 was a member of the newly founded Oberliga Hessen. After two years it rose again from the national league in Northern Hesse.

Rise of Giessen for top team

After many years in the national league, the Giessen managed from 1962, also thanks to new signing Ernest Butler, ascend again to the Oberliga West. Also in the same year they won for the third time the Hesse Cup. In the first year the team for the final round of the German Cup qualifying. There you failed in the 2nd round at the later champions from Aachen, although the team managed to inflict the only defeat of the season the people of Aachen. 1965 were able to penetrate into the final of the championship the first time Giessen, which was held in Heidelberg. Through the decisive basket of Butler, the team won with 69:68 against VfL Osnabrück first German championship. This duel was the first of several to fight in the coming years against the Osnabrück to winning the title.

With the establishment of two-tier basketball league (BBL ) in 1966 Giessen men gymnasts competed in the top division of the German Basketball Federation (DBB). Right in the first season of BBL could you win in the final against Osnabrück, which they won with 85:73 the second championship. The following year, the title was defended. In the finals they defeated again, this time the host Osnabrück team with 79:69.

In the 1968/69 season succeeded the Osnabrückern the only time to hit the Giessen in the final. Before domestic Giessen audience the team lost time with 69:76 against the rivals. Two months later, the Giessen could return the favor by they could win with a 75:74 victory against VfL their first Cup victory. Also in the following year had to be content with the title of vice champion, this time to a 73:76 defeat against TuS 04 Leverkusen. In the season 1970/71 there since the founding of the BBL failed the first team to move into the final. You had to be content with third place, which you could win in two games against USC Heidelberg. In the following season they lost in the final against Leverkusen again, this time with defeats in both finals.

1973 was probably the most exciting finals in the history of Giessen. Since both the outward and the return match each ended in a draw, the second leg in Heidelberg went into overtime. There, the Giessen finally subject with a point of difference 70:71. Now this was the fourth runner-up in the last 5 years. A short time later, the team was able to at least secure the Cup win against MTV Wolfenbüttel. In the following year it reached again not to the title, they lost two games in the semifinals due to the bad points difference against the SSV Hagen.

After a seven-year losing streak the 1975 Giessen could win their fourth German championship. Again, it went against the rivals from Heidelberg, against whom they had only narrowly lost two years ago. This time, the Giessen could thanks to better enforce difference from the two games and celebrate their title. Despite together remaining crew of MTV was unable to repeat the performance in the following year, reaching at the end of the now single track Bundesliga, in which there were no more finals, but only return games, a disappointing 5th place.

For the period game time 1976/77 there was another tournament in which the best six teams took their points again and played against each other. KO games as before but there was still no. After the Giessen again came in 5th place in the main round, they could play it thanks to a good final round at # 3. While in the meantime also a renewed winning the title seemed possible, but had to after defeats against the top teams from Heidelberg and Leverkusen are buried all hopes.

In 1978, the Giessen were able to celebrate their fifth and last championship. The third of the main round, equal on points with the top two rivals from Heidelberg and Leverkusen had the Giessen good chances to win the title again. The Giessen played a good tournament and thanks to a 67:65 victory over the MTV Wolfenbüttel in the penultimate round, the team made ahead of winning the title clear. Also in 1979 went to Giessen as one of the favorites for the title in the season, which proved to be justified as the leader after the main round. In the final round, however, the Giessen schwächelten and were able to win only 4 of the 10 games. In the end, the team ended up just yet on the 2nd place, significantly behind that of the new masters from Leverkusen. In contrast, the Giessen could clearly make their third Cup win in which they won just two games against SSC Göttingen.

A total of five German championships (1965, 1967, 1968, 1975, 1978) and three cup wins (1969, 1973, 1979) was the MTV win this time.

From the 80s

At the beginning of the 1980 casting was always among the top favorites for the league and cup, yet remained reach the Cup final in 1980 against BSC Saturn Köln the last major success. Thus, the club had in 1983 for the first time in the relegation round and attendances fell. After several weak years, the team reached the semi-finals again in 1987 to the German Cup, where to but again lost to Cologne. This should be the last collection for the next 14 years, although the association in 1992 the former NBA player Leon Wood took, among other things for the playoffs under contract.

Early 1990s was the increasing commercialization of the basketball league in casting the professionalization of management with the acquisition of care by the GISPO Sport Marketing GmbH. This was followed in 1993 renamed the " casting Flippers " including a change in the logo, which now showed a dolphin. The achievements under this name were reaching the cup final in 1997 and 1999 in their own hall in Frankfurt, where they lost each against Alba Berlin.

2000-2010

With the start of the 2000/01 season the Lindener PC consignor Avitos for three years as title sponsor of the Giessen team that first year came under the name " Avitos casting " under Coach Joe Whelton immediately to in the playoff semi-finals, where they later champion Alba Berlin defeated. As part of the new sponsor the traditional Giessen colors were red and white replaced by the sponsor colors blue, yellow and black. Next year, the Off followed in the quarterfinals against the newly formed team of Cologne before after disastrous start to the season just missed the playoffs in the 2002/03 season. In the same season, the team reached the TOP4 tournament for the cup in a sensational game against the " arch-rival " from Frankfurt.

After the three years Avitos not renewed the sponsorship agreement and the search for a new title sponsor was unsuccessful. The management then tied back to the tradition of MTV casting on and changed the jersey and team colors back to red and white. After the Treaty of Joe Whelton was not renewed as head coach, Chris Finch came with a coach from England to the Lahn, which should lead the 46ers back into the playoffs. After nearly two -thirds of the season, however, he was dismissed and replaced by former Bundesliga player of the MTV casting, Armin Andres. Andres was previously employed in the Bundesliga, among others, the teams from Bamberg and Hagen as head coach. But despite the new coach of the last matchday of the 2003/ 04 sealed the first Giessen relegation from the first division of the German basketball - for now. A defeat of the eventual finalists GHP Bamberg at the last remaining competitor for the league, EnBW Ludwigsburg brought at that time the decision. The central German basketball club was deprived of the right to participate due to the bankruptcy, the club was declared after the season for relegated. Since the second relegated team, Brandt Hagen, also had to join the league in the third for economic reasons remained the Giessen in the Bundesliga.

With the new coach, Stefan Koch, who hails from the nearby town of Lich and already previously worked in casting, the 46ers turned out in the season 2004/ 05 as the surprise team of the league: instead to fight against relegation, the team played in the playoffs. Particularly piquant: On the day exactly one year after the apparent sealing of the descent the playoff participation was secured with a win in Ludwigsburg. Also, the opponent in the quarterfinals, Rhein Energie Cologne, a favorite for the title, could the team to the American small forward Giessen, Chuck Eidson, not hinder, to win the series three games to two. This Eidson scored in the decisive match in Cologne valid until today 's club record of 40 points in a playoff game and Souleymane Wane Center presented the record of six blocks in a match. About this memorable fifth game in 2008 was even a movie with the title " FIVE ". In the semifinals, then they lost after large fight was later called the carrier of Bamberg with one to three games. Two months after the end of the season Chuck Eidson was voted by the fans of basketball league for his all-round game player of the year.

The following year, was unable to repeat the success of last season one. You clearly missed the playoffs and ended up in the table in 11th place. However, Anton Gavel was named Rookie of the Year. This, however, was not just to keep as Chuck Eidson because of disappointing season and for financial reasons in Giessen.

The 2006/07 season was characterized by a renewed fresh start under coach Stefan Koch and the new Austrian assistant coach Gerald Wasshuber. Christoph Berndt joined the successor as managing director of Christian Maruschka. However, the mainly occupied with unknown talents team could win until November 2006, no single game. So she sat further defeats after the first win, put Stefan Koch on 4 December 2006 from his position as coach down. He was succeeded three days later to Ken Scalabroni. In addition, Dirk Schaefer took over on 18 January 2007, the successor of Christoph Berndt as Managing Director of the parent of the 46ers. At the end of the season the Giessen landed despite the bad start to the season at the 16th rank and coach Ken Scalabroni was replaced with the end of the season 2006/ 07 by Thorsten Leibenath.

In December 2006 the main financial, economic and legal committee of the Giessen City Council approved the adoption of a performance guarantee for the club in the amount of 200,000 euros. Reason for this was that the banks needed a security in the period between the payment of liabilities and the arrival of sponsorship. The adoption of this indemnity bond was very controversial in casting, as a corporation ( Giessen ) for a privately operated enterprise ( 46ers ) took a loss guarantee.

The year 2007/ 08 began again with many players change, which meant that the team had to be reassembled again for the most part. The team once again reached only the 16th Place and the financial situation came to a head more and more. In January Manager Dirk Schäfer appeared before the press to announce that for the continuation of gaming operations 200,000 euros would be needed until the end of February. Many fans then organized donations and advertising campaigns to support the club. On 24 January 2008 Dirk Schäfer joined again before the press to present the LTi Group as a new main and title sponsor. The Giessen 46ers thus operate for the time being until the end of the 2009/10 season under the name of LTi. Then was the financial distress than defused dramatically.

After the disappointing season, there were, as in the previous year, the season-ending a coaching change. Simon Cote came for Thorsten Leibenath, who acted in a buy-out clause in the contract and switched to the Artland Dragons.

After a poor start to the season in the game year 2008/ 09 the team slipped to last place in the table. In October it was announced that the club was on the verge of bankruptcy. The debt amounted to 500,000 euros. Because of the activity was the "savior card" launched by the club, the first contained only a ticket for the home game against Telekom Baskets Bonn and automatically extended to a season ticket for the rest of the season because the club had not filed. Due to the permanently poor financial situation, there were also several personnel changes. As CEO Christoph Syring has been installed and the previous manager Dirk Schaefer took over as a result, the post of sales manager. After losing game against the New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig Simon Cote was released with immediate effect from his job as head coach. Its function took over the sports director Vladimir Bogojević in personal union initially temporary basis until the end of the season 2008 /2009. Then Bogojevic remained as a head coach.

On April 26 was fixed after 2004 the new relegation of the longest member of the Basketball Bundesliga. However, it was assigned a wildcard on 9 July 2009, so the 46ers in the 2009/10 season played in the first league due to the withdrawal of the Giants Nördlingen.

The new season started with a poor start to the season. Although one set with David Teague leading up to the winter break Topscorerliste, but you lost the first seven games. Since only 5 games we won by 19 Gameday and Teague drew upon a cartilage damage, which led to his contract termination finally in March, one committed with Osvaldo Jeanty and Elvir Ovčina two experienced players who essentially helped to make the Gießener the season were able to finish on the 14th Place.

Since 2010

The 2010/11 season began promisingly for the 46ers. On the opening day victory against Telekom Baskets Bonn could be won and after seven games you stood with five wins on the front seats. After a subsequent series of 12 defeats in succession and slipping to 16th place in the table Bogojevic occurred in 16 January 2011 from his post as head coach back and was confined to his duties as sports director of the association. His successor was the American Steven Key, which was awarded a contract until the end of the season. Although the negative series could soon be ended, but did not succeed in the club, to distance themselves from the relegation zone. In the end it was enough on the final day of the season with the 15th Place for relegation. Despite reaching the goal of the season expiring contract was not renewed with Key so that the 46ers on May 30 the previous MBC coach Bjorn Harmsen presented as the new head coach.

The 2011/12 season, the 46ers spent most of the time in the lower section of the table. Despite some changes in the squad and Nachverpflichtungen never made the team consistent performances retrieve. On the final day of the main round, there was a decisive battle for the descent against Phoenix Hagen. Previously, the BG Göttingen was already a sporty relegated. Due to the 85 to 72 defeat in Hagen was casting on 28 April 2012 as the second relegated from the BBL firm and would have to play the course in the second league for the first time in club history. However, following the withdrawal of Pro A runner- Kirchheim Knights remained a place in the national basketball league initially free. The League allowed a wildcard method and it competed for the casting 46ers and the Giants Dusseldorf at the free launch site for the 2012/2013 season. The tender was awarded on June 6, 2012, the LTi Giessen 46ers, who are thus continue to be represented in the Beko BBL.

After last season athletic again disappointing a majority of the team was at the start of the 2012/13 season again exchanged and Mathias Fischer committed as the new head coach. However, until 14 Matchday only four victories were achieved. On December 22, 2012 right after the home win in the game against runner- ratiopharm Ulm, it was announced that the casting 46ers have asked the local court casting for bankruptcy due to impending insolvency. This also meant a deduction of 4 points in the table, making the prospects for the league were very low. The end of January, 2013 2 points were deducted because the association has failed in the notification duty to the BBL again.

The club managed by Fanspenden, sponsors payments and loans to collect the shortfall of 360,000 € to end the season. However, the team lost key employees like Ryan Brooks, who was released along with Laquan Prowell to the Frankfurt Skyliners or jasmine Perković, which drew a contract option to premature termination of the contract. The 46ers made it then no longer to win one more game and ended up at the end of the season with only two positive rating points in last place and got the last founding member of the Basketball Bundesliga for the first time after 46 years from. Thus, the club started in the 2013/14 season in the second-rate ProA.

Attendances

Rivalries

A special rivalry to the fans of Frankfurt Skyliners. This is due to one of the short distance and the emergence of the so-called Hessen derby, as well as the fact that casting is a founding member of the BBL with many successes in the past, in contrast to the team, founded in 1999, which has accordingly successes in recent years.

In the early years of the Basketball Bundesliga, there was a certain rivalry to fans of VfL Osnabrück. This is justified from the many finals (4x Bundesliga, 1x Cup ), in which both teams played against each other until 1970. The finals of the first three years Bundesliga always denominated MTV casting - VfL Osnabrück. At the end of the Giessen could almost always prevail, only 1969 won the VfL pouring in the German Championship. This rivalry ended but soon, as the basketball department of Osnabrück was closed in 1973.
