Giethoorn

Giethoorn is a village of 2500 inhabitants in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands. Administratively it belongs together with Steenwijk, Vollenhove and Blokzijl to the municipality Steenwijkerland. It is also called because of the many canals in the city " Venice of the North ". This tortuous eight kilometers long around a village channel ( dorpsgracht ) scale village located amidst the nature reserve " De Wieden ".

The houses are each on high ground and often even the typical thatched roofs with curved camel shape. It is crossed by numerous transverse channels. Built out over the channels are the characteristic wooden bridges this " water village ". Adjacent is the National Park De Weerribben. Together, this is the largest lowland bog in Western Europe. Giethoorn is a tourist attraction as a car-free village water.
