Giez (Haute-Savoie)

Giez is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Giez is located on 510 m above sea level. M., west of Faverges, about 19 km southeast of the town of Annecy (air line). The village is located on the southern edge of the broad Talfurche of Faverges which separates the Bornes Alps in the north by the massif of the Wallows in the south, at the northern foot of the Pointe de Vélan.

The area of ​​12.65 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Savoy Alps. The northern part is occupied by the community here about 2 km wide Talfurche extending from Lac d' Annecy to Ugine after and was created by the Ice Age glaciers. This partly vermoorte valley basin is drained by the Eau Morte northwest of Lac d' Annecy. History

Giez is first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Gy and Gyé documented. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman family names Gaius and means something like estate of Gaius. Since 1204 the castle of the noble family Giez Villette heard. The iron ore deposits in the area have been exploited since the late Middle Ages, and processes the iron in Giez. In the 18th and 19th centuries there was a Taftfabrik in place.

Attractions

The village church of Saint- Barthelemy was built in 1846 in neo-classical style and has a Baroque altar. 1430 Château de Gye was built in its present form; major renovations and conversions took place in the 19th century.

Population

With 554 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Giez one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1861 were still in Giez counted 474 inhabitants). Since the early 1980s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy and infrastructure

Giez was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various operations of local small businesses, including a sawmill. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work. Giez is the site of a golf course.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the main road N508 that runs from Annecy to Albertville. Giez had a station on the railway line from Albertville to Doussard, which is now closed.
