Gila River Indian Community

The Gila River Indian Reservation is an Indian reservation in the State of Arizona in the area of the Gila River. It is located south of Phoenix, Tempe and Chandler. In the reserve 14,000 inhabitants 1,505 km ². The reserve was established in 1859 and in 1939 officially recognized as such.

The Gila River Indian Reservation is inhabited by two linguistically different but culturally similar tribes - the to the river Yuma scoring Maricopa, the Pee- Posh itself - ' people ' or 'people' call, Keli Akimel O'Odham and the ( proper name Keli Akimel Au Authm - ' people living along the Gila River '), a subgroup of the Akimel O'Odham.

Inside the reserve lies the Hohokam Pima National Monument A National Monument, which preserves the settlement Snaketown the prehistoric Hohokam culture. It is not accessible to the public.
