Gilbert, Count of Montpensier

Gilbert de Bourbon- Montpensier (* 1443, † October 5, 1496 in captivity Pozzuola, Italy) was Count of Montpensier, Lord of Mercœur and Dauphin of Auvergne

Life

Gilbert was the eldest son of Count Louis I, known as the Good, and his second wife Countess Gabrielle de La Tour d' Auvergne, daughter of Count Bertrand V. father's side he was a grandson of Duke Jean I. From his cousin, Charles VIII, he was appointed lieutenant general and later governor of Paris. 1494 he moved to Italy. There he was appointed Duke of Sessa and the French viceroy of Naples.

On February 25, 1481, he married Clara Gonzaga ( 1464-1503 ), daughter of the Marquis Federico Gonzaga I. and his wife Margaret of Bavaria. The marriage produced six children:
