Giovanni Andrea Sirani

Giovanni Andrea Sirani ( born September 4, 1610 Bologna, † May 21, 1670 ) was an Italian painter. Sirani one of the greatest painters of the Italian Seicento.

Life

Sirani was a pupil of Giacomo Cavedone, as well as students and staff Guido Reni ( 1575-1642 ). He painted in the way a number of altarpieces for churches, especially his hometown of Bologna, under which the " Feast in the house of the Pharisee " in the Charterhouse, the "Presentation in the Temple" in the Pinacoteca at Bologna and the " Ascension of Christ " in the Borgo Panicale are emphasized. Sirani was a representative of academicism.

After the death of Giovanni Renis Sirani founded his own school in which his daughter Elisabetta Sirani was his protégée. His recent works show the influence of the Venetian school of painters like Francesco Gessi and Simone Cantarini. He died in 1670, five years after the untimely death of his daughter.
