Giovanni Battista Zelotti

Giovanni Battista Zelotti (* about 1526 probably in Verona; † 28 August 1578 in Mantua ) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance.

Life and works

Giambattista Zelotti was one of the most famous and celebrated fresco painters who were active in the Venetian mainland in the mid- 16th century. He was trained with Antonio Badile and Domenico Riccio, perhaps even with Titian. After Bernasconi he should have learned from his uncle Paolo Farinati. From Vasari he is, but also called Battista di Verona Battista Farinati. He was a contemporary of Paolo Veronese, with whom he had a close working relationship. He worked with him on the frescoes of the Villa Da Porto Colleoni Thiene, the Villa Soranzo, besides, he was in Venice with works in the Doge's Palace (1553 /54) and entrusted in the Biblioteca Marciana ( 1556/57 ). Orders resulted in even after Vicenza: Working in the Palazzo Chiericati ( 1558 ) and in the Cathedral ( 1572). He enjoyed an excellent reputation among the noble families of his time and was more frequently entrusted with the painting of their country seats. In 1557 it created the frescoes in the Villa Godi in Lonedo, then at the Villa Emo in Fanzolo and in the Malcontenta. By 1570, he worked in the Castello del Catajo and painted two rooms in the villa Caldagno from. 1572 Da Porto active in the villa in Torri di Quartesolo. 1575 finally he moved as prefect of the ducal buildings to Mantua, where he died in 1578. Zelottis paintings created with close reference to the ideals of Palladio. His frescoes are typical examples of trompe l'oeil. The walls are divided by architectural elements and filled with landscapes, mythological scenes, allegorical figures or historical cycles.

Together with Paolo Veronese, he worked on the following projects:

  • Villa Soranza at Castelfranco ( 1551 ) - of these works only remains are preserved today.
  • Doge's Palace ( ceiling of the Sala del Consiglio dei Dieci ) in Venice (1553 /54).
  • Biblioteca Marciana ( 1556/57 ) in Venice.
  • Palazzo Trevisan in Murano.

Other collaborations and independent works:

  • Villa Foscari in Malcontenta (VE) - together with Bernardino India and Battista Franco, he created the fresco decorations. Today, only remnants exist.
  • Villa Emo in Fanzolo (TV) - allegorical representation of the arts.
  • Villa Roberti in BRUGINE (PD ) - landscapes in which to play episodes from the Metamorphoses of Ovid.
  • Castello Obizzi called Cataio in Battaglia Terme ( PD) - scenes from Roman history and a cycle of frescoes by contemporary battle scenes in which the Obizzi reaped fame ( 1570 ).
  • Villa Godi Valmarana in Lugo di Vicenza ( VI) - Hercules when deciding between virtue and vice, Hall of Arts, hall of Olympus, Hall of Venus.
  • Villa Caldogno Caldogno (VI ) - Hall of Scipio, the majority was decorated by Giovanni Antonio Fasolo.
  • Palazzo Chiericati in Vicenza.
  • Villa Porto Colleoni Thiene (VI ) - together with Giovanni Antonio Fasolo.
  • Villa Da Porto in Torri di Quartesolo - the frescoes are now in the Town Hall and the Museum of Vicenza.
  • Praglia Abbey - dome fresco and altarpiece.
