Giovanni Diodati

Giovanni Diodati, Jean Diodati, ( born June 3, (a source calls the June 6 ) 1576 in Geneva, † October 3, 1649 in Geneva ) was a Reformed theologian, diplomat and translator.

Family

Giovanni Diodati was the son of Carlo Diodati, a Tuscan nobleman, who had fled for religious reasons from Lucca to Geneva in 1567 as will the father of Bénédict Turrettini. His brothers were Elias Diodati and Theodore Diodati. Gabriel Diodati is a descendant of him.

At the Geneva Academy, he studied theology and was influenced by Isaac Casaubon and Theodore de Beze. As a preacher, he was a major influence on the church, secular and political life in Geneva - and he was several times entrusted with delicate diplomatic missions, in particular in 1611 to France.

He was known primarily for his Italian translation of the Bible ( first edition Geneva 1607).
