Giovanni Durando

Giovanni Durando ( born June 23, 1804 in Mondovi, † May 27, 1869 in Florence ) was an Italian Lieutenant General and brother of Giacomo Durando and Marcantonio Durando.

He fought for the liberal cause 1833-42 in Portugal and Spain and commanded 1848 the papal troops. However, he defied the orders of Pope Pius IX. neutrality in the war of independence of Italy and joined the army of Piedmont, to fight against the Austrians.

In Sardinian War (1859 ), he led one of the five divisions of the Kingdom of Sardinia at the Battle of Solferino.

His brother Giacomo Durando was also General and in 1862 Secretary of State in the Cabinet Rattazzi ( from March to December 1862 ). In June 1866 he fought as Commanding General of I Corps at the Mincio army of General Alfonso La Marmora at the Battle of Custoza against the Austrians.
