Giovanni II. Cornaro

Giovanni Corner, also known as Giovanni Cornaro (* August 4, 1647 in Venice, † August 12, 1722 ibid ) was the fourth and last Doge of Venice, who came from the Cornaro family. He was the 111th Doge of Venice.

Corner was the eldest of two sons of Federico Corner and Cornelia Contarini and brother of Cardinal Giorgio. In addition, he was the grandson of Francesco Cornaro. From his marriage with Laura Corner, a distant relative of an equally rich branch of the family were born four sons. Giovanni Corners descendants extinct with his grandson Piero Francesco in the male line. After he had already held several political offices - for example, in 1683 Senator, Governor 1691 in Brescia, Giovanni Cornaro was elected in 1709 to the Doge of Venice. He was considered unremarkable and politically ambitious enough, so they agreed on him, as a compromise solution to a dispute between the families Diedo and Pisani.

During his tenure, the loss of the Morea fell ( as the medieval name of the Peloponnese ) to the Turks.

The grave of the Doge is located in the family chapel of San Nicola da Tolentino in Cornaro.
