Giovanni Panico

Cardinal Giovanni Panico ( born April 12, 1895 in Tricase, Lecce, Italy, † July 7, 1962 ) was a Vatican diplomat.

Life

Giovanni Panico studied in Ugento Rome and the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 14 March 1919, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies, he joined in 1922 in the diplomatic service of the Vatican. From 1923 to 1927 he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Colombia, from 1927 to 1931 for the Apostolic Nunciature in Argentina, from 1931 to 1933 for the Apostolic Nunciature in Germany and 1933-1935 for the Apostolic Nunciature in Czechoslovakia. 1935 Pope Pius XI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Iustiniana Prima and apostolic delegate in Australia. The episcopal ordination he received on 8 December of the same year by Cardinal Pietro Biondi Fumasoni. 1937 sent him Pope Pius XI. as papal legate to Sydney for the general assembly of the bishops of New Zealand and Australia. Pope Pius XII. 1948 appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Peru in 1953 and apostolic delegate in Canada. In 1959 he was entrusted by Pope John XXIII. with the leadership of the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal. Giovanni Panico was taken as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Teresa al Corso d' Italia in the College of Cardinals on 19 March 1962. A few months later, he died on July 7, 1962 in his birthplace, where he was also buried.
