Giovanni Paolo Cima

Giovanni Paolo Cima (* 1570, † 1622 in Milan ) was an Italian composer and organist of the early Baroque.

Giovanni Paolo Cima was one of the leading musicians in Milan at the turn of the 16th and 17th century. From 1610 he was music director and organist at the church of S. Celso.

He composed mostly sacred music, this includes his 6 church sonatas, which originated around the year 1610. Cima sat in these sonatas for the first time the violin as a solo instrument and created two of these sonatas earliest examples of the trio sonata.

His younger brother Giovanni Andrea Cima ( 1580 to after 1627 ) was also active as a composer and organist in Milan.
