Giovanni Pietro Berti

Giovanni Pietro Berti (* 1590, † 1638 in Venice) was a Venetian composer, organist and singer of the Baroque.

Life and work

Giovanni Pietro Berti received his training as a boy soprano at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, and later he was employed at the local chapel by Claudio Monteverdi as a tenor with a level 70 ducats. On September 16, 1624, he obtained the post of organist at St. Mark's second, in this position he remained until his death. His successor was Francesco Cavalli.

Berti was one of the composers for the first time the term " Cantada " ( Cantata ) began, with this he does not describe the form of recitative and aria, as was usual 30 years later, but a variety of sung text passages and instrumental ritornello.
