Giovanni Serodine

Giovanni Serodine (* 1594 in Ascona, † December 21, 1630 in Rome) was a Swiss painter and plasterer of the Seicento.

Life

Who died young, Giovanni Serodine leaving behind only a few pictures, especially portraits and figure groups of strong expressive power. He is next to Pier Francesco Mola (1612-1666) the most important painters of this period from Ticino. His father Cristofero Serodine worked as a foreman and contractor in Rome. The first artistic training was Giovanni at his older brother, first as a plasterer. Both ornamented together in 1623 three rooms of the Palazzo Borghese with paintings and stucco, but which are not obtained. With whom Giovanni learned the painting, is not precisely known, it is believed the workshop of Antiveduto Grammatica ( 1570-1626 ). Apparently, his idol Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio ( 1571-1610 ). As far as we know of no portrait of him survives. His mother was Caterina Porta. In Ascona, there is still the home of his family, the Casa Serodine.
