Giovanny Espinoza

Giovanny Patricio Espinoza Pavón (sometimes Geovanny, Geovani or Giovanni and Pabón written; born April 12, 1977 in Chalguayacu ) is an Ecuadorian footballer. He plays for Birmingham City and is a regular in the center of defense of the Ecuadorian national team. His nickname is La Sombra Espinoza (Eng. The shadow Espinoza ), since he hardly shake a hand of opposing strikers and on the other hand is dark-skinned.

Career

Association

Espinoza began his career in 1994 at SD Aucas in Quito, for which he gave his Erstligadebüt 1999. In the summer of 2001, he moved to Monterrey to Mexico, but returned in 2002 back to Auca. Between February 2003 and December 2006, he played in Liga de Quito in Ecuador. With his team he won the Ecuadorian championship in 2003 and 2005 (Apertura) and in 2006 reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. On 20 December 2006, a two-month suspension for championships and international matches was imposed after he had actively taken part in a brawl between players from Liga de Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil following the last season game a few days earlier against him. He changed end of January 2007 to Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands, where he was employed for the first time in mid-February. In January 2008 he joined Cruzeiro EC, as Vitesse had to reduce their squad due to financial difficulties. A year later he was obliged Barcelona SC in his home country. In July 2009, he moved like his compatriot Cristian Benítez to Birmingham City in the English Premier League.

National

His debut in the national team gave Espinoza on June 25, 2000 during a friendly match against Panama, which was won 5-0. By March 28, 2009, he graduated from 87 matches in which he scored two goals. He was nominated by coach Luis Fernando Suarez for the 2006 World Cup and played in all four games of his team. Espinoza has already participated in the 2002 World Cup, but was at the time not used by coach Hernan Dario Gomez.

He also took part in the tournaments for the Copa América 2001, 2004 and 2007.
