Girolamo Benzoni

Girolamo Benzoni (* 1519 in Milan, † 1570 in Spain ) was an Italian traveler and historian of the Renaissance.

Life

Benzoni was the son of a Milanese businessman, traveled on business to Germany and Spain, and finally joined in 1542 the Spanish expeditions in the New World. Benzoni visited Peru and the West Indies in 1556 and returned back to Spain. His "Historia del Mondo Nuovo " contributes heavily autobiographical. It is based on older sources, but also contains numerous personal observations Benzonis. He led the first European in the history books, has seen the Chimborazo.
