Gisbertus Voetius

Gisbert (us) Voetius (also: Gijs Voet; * March 3, 1589 in Heusden, The Netherlands, † November 1, 1676 in Utrecht ) was a Reformed theologian.

Life and work

As head of the Reformed orthodoxy in the Netherlands, he was an implacable enemy of the Arminians and the Cartesians and by Johannes Cocceius and Jean de Labadie. In 1617 he became pastor at his birthplace and took in this role at the Synod of Dort in part. From 1634 he was professor of theology in Utrecht and arrived at a large influence. His main work is called dogmatic selectae Disputationes theologicae (Utrecht 1648). Voetius regarded as the founder of the qualifier Reformation. As the Utrecht university teacher, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was in the years 1641/42, 1660/61, 1671/72, 1675/76 Rector of the Alma Mater.

With his defense " de theologia practica " Voetius created the first outline of a program for a Practical Theology in Church history.

The defense has the following chapters:

  • Teaching of the Sermon ( concionatoria )
  • Doctrine of the Christian life ( ascetia ).
  • Doctrine of pastoral care ( moralis seu casuistica ), and the
  • Doctrine of the church leadership ( politico - ecclesiastica ).

Voetius was buried in St. Catherine's Church of Utrecht.
