Giulio Rinaldi

Giulio Rinaldi ( born February 13, 1935 in Anzio, † July 16, 2011 ) was an Italian boxer. He was European champion professional boxer in the light heavyweight division.

Career

Amateur career

Giulio Rinaldi already been very successful as an amateur. It was founded in 1956 by Italian masters in the middleweight division and represented his country at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. There he won in the second round over the Danes Christian Andersen on points. For his next bout against the eventual Olympic champion Gennady Schatkow from the Soviet Union could not compete due to injury. He finished in three other boxers the 5th Place.

Professional career

After the Olympic Games in Melbourne Giulio Rinaldi was a professional boxer. He played his first fight as a professional on March 23, 1957 in Rome, defeating his compatriot while Giuliano Bianchi by TKO in the 5th round. Other milestones on the road to championship fights were his victories over Artemio Calzavara on January 8, 1959 in Rome and Rocco Mazzola on October 21, 1959 in Rome, against whom he on 13 July 1959, however, have to plug in a Rome defeat by TKO. At his first championship fight came Giulio Rinaldi on 8 March 1960 in Rome. He fought against Sante Amonti to the Italian championship in the light heavyweight and won this fight by TKO in the second round. In a fight, who was considered a qualification for a fight for the EBU European Championship, Giulio Rinaldi defeated on June 4, 1960 in Rome, the French Germinal Ballarin after 12 rounds by points. On September 28, 1962 Giulio Rinaldi but then got the opportunity against the Scots Chic Calderwood for the vacant European light-heavyweight fight. He won that fight after 15 rounds by points and was so new EBU European champion in the light heavyweight division. He defended this title on 23 May 1963 in Rome successfully against one of its predecessor, Erich Schöppner from Witten, whom he defeated on points. His next two fights against German opponents lost Giulio Rinaldi, however. In a non-title fight on February 28, 1964 in Rome against Hans -Werner Wohlers he was disqualified in the second round due to look-up and on April 4, 1964, he lost his European title in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund to Berlin Gustav Scholz, against whom he due to unclean method of fighting was disqualified in the ninth round.

On July 8, 1965 Giulio Rinaldi was but then again European Champion in the light heavyweight division. He defeated on this day the Germans by Klaus Peter Gumpert techn. Knockout in the 13th round. The title had been vacant after the resignation of Gustav Scholz. Lange Giulio Rinaldi could not enjoy this title because he lost it on 11 March 1966 in Rome to his compatriot Piero del Papa in 15 rounds on points.

After this fight Giulio Rinaldi contested in the heavyweight division still 14 fights, of which he lost seven. Noteworthy were there his three " ring battles ," which he delivered himself with Wilhelm von Homburg ( Norbert Grupe ). On January 3, 1969, he lost to Homburg in Berlin by TKO in the 5th round, on 14 February 1969, he won over this in Hamburg after 10 rounds on points and on April 2, 1969 lost Giulio Rinaldi against Homberg again in Berlin by TKO in the 8th round. On August 22, 1970, Giulio Rinaldi in Anzio Italian heavyweight champion by a disqualification victory in the eighth round of Gianfranco Macchia. This title he lost on 23 October 1970 in Rome by a knockout loss in the 5th round of Domenico Adinolfi. After this defeat, he ended his career boxers.
