Giulio Terzi di Sant'Agata Maria ( Giulio Terzi short; born June 9, 1946 in Bergamo ) is an Italian diplomat and was, until his resignation on March 26, 2013 Foreign Minister in the group consisting of professionals Monti government. By November 2011 he was the Italian Ambassador in Washington, DC

Career

Giulio Terzi di Sant'Agata comes from an old Lombard noble family. In Milan, he studied law while specializing in international law. In 1973, he joined the Foreign Service in Italy. He initially worked for two years at the protocol Aryan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then. As First Secretary at the Italian Embassy in Paris In 1978 he became assistant to the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry and then almost five years Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs in Ottawa, Canada. As an Italian Consul General in Vancouver, he organized there during Expo 86 different events to strengthen economic and cultural relations of Italy to Canada. In 1987 he returned to the Ministry to Rome and took over responsibilities in the departments of Economics and personnel. The next foreign assignment took him to Brussels, where he worked as a political consultant for the Representation of Italy to NATO. This was followed from 1993 to 1998, the Italian Mission to the United Nations in New York City, where he was Deputy Head of the Permanent Representation. Back in Rome Terzi di Sant'Agata took over the post of Deputy Secretary-General of the Foreign Ministry and head of the Department of Political Affairs and Human Rights. From 2002 to 2004 he was Italian ambassador to Israel. From 2008 to 2009 he was Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and then Italian Ambassador to the United States. His appointment as foreign minister in the government of experts consisting of Mario Monti came as such a surprise that Terzi di Sant'Agata was unable to appear on November 16, 2011 swearing-in of ministers in the Quirinale Palace. His swearing-in ceremony was rescheduled later. In Rome there is, Gianfranco Fini had proposed as Foreign Minister Terzi. Terzi is married for the second time and is the father of twins.
