Giurgeni

Giurgeni [ dʒiurdʒen ] is a municipality in the district of Ialomiţa in southeastern Romania.

Geographical location

The community Giurgeni located in the extreme north-east of the circle Ialomiţa. On the left bank of the Danube and on the European road Europe 60, the place is located 22 km northeast Giurgeni from the small town Ţăndărei; the district capital Slobozia is about 48 kilometers southwest of Giurgeni away.

In the West Giurgenis close to the vast plains of the Bărăgan - steppe. The huge municipal area is very sparsely populated and consists only of the main town. Near the village unite the Donauhauptarm and the Borcea arm before the Danube a few kilometers downriver again divides, in the Cremenea arm and the Vâlciu arm.

History

A settlement of the region goes to findings in the area of the place - back to the Bronze Age - known locally as La Mozacu. The community was hit by severe flooding due to their location on numerous occasions; the heaviest of which occurred in 1970. This natural disaster was also the district Piua Pietrii, who was lying on the field of medieval city Târgul de Ploci, completely destroyed. These were, in the opinion of many researchers around the origin of the Romanian national hero Michael the Brave.

Today, the historic archaeological site Ploci is mainly used for smaller decorative objects excavations, which are exhibited at the village festival.

Economy

The economy of this rural area are animal husbandry and agriculture, and in the Danube basin mostly humid rice is grown. Also fishing and sports tourism are the main sources of revenue of the municipality.

Due to the favorable sea connections with the Danube, to other investors are lured into the place, in order to finance various projects in the future can. These include, for example, the expansion of the water supply and the construction of sports facilities and a rehabilitation center to call.

Traffic

The community for their Donaubrücke Giurgeni - Vadu Oii, which is one of the oldest traffic bridges in the region after its opening in 1971, is known. It is 1446 meters long and connects Giurgeni with the district Vadu Oii the neighboring community Hârşova in Constanta county.
