Giuseppe Girotti

Father Giuseppe Girotti OP ( born July 19, 1905 in Alba, Piedmont, Italy, † April 1, 1945 in the Dachau concentration camp) was an Italian friar and priest, professor, exegete and since October 9, 1944 a prisoner in the Dachau concentration camp. The Israeli Yad Vashem awarded him as Righteous Among the Nations.

Life

Girotti comes from a modest background. At thirteen he went to the seminary of Chieri. He studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome and at the École biblique in Jerusalem. On August 3, 1930 he was ordained a priest.

Girotti taught in Turin at the theological seminary of Santa Maria delle Rose and the Academy of the Consolata Missionaries. After the German occupation and the establishment of the Italian Social Republic on September 8, 1943 Girotti has created a network to help the persecuted Jews. He supplied them safe hiding places and false identity papers.

On 29 August 1944 he was arrested for his anti-fascist activities, after he had been betrayed by an informer. He was born in Turin, Milan ( San Vittore prison ) and Bolzano detained in custody until he was transferred to the Dachau concentration camp. According to the testimony of Angelo Dalmasso, another imprisoned priests, he was very generous and very popular for its openness to other prisoners. Girotti died on April 1, 1945 in the infirmary in the Dachau concentration camp. A companion wrote to his bunk: Here slept San Giuseppe Girotti.

Awards

On 14 February 1995, he received recognition by the State of Israel posthumously the medal Righteous among the Nations.

In his honor, was planted at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem in the Avenue of the Righteous a tree.

Beatification

The process of beatification was opened in 1988. The decree for the beatification of Pope Francis was signed on 27 March 2013.
