Giuseppe Pizzardo

Giuseppe Cardinal Pizzardo ( born July 13, 1877 in Savona, Italy; † August 1, 1970 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Giuseppe Pizzardo studied in Savona and Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. He received on September 19, 1903, the sacrament of Holy Orders and, after further studies as a pastor in Rome. In 1908 he entered the diplomatic service of the Vatican. He worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Bavaria and in the Vatican Secretariat of State. From 1920 he worked in the special ecclesiastical affairs of the Curia. In 1923 he was ecclesiastical advisor to Catholic Action in Italy, in 1929 Secretary of the Curia for special church affairs.

Pope Pius XI. appointed Giuseppe Pizzardo 1930 Titular Archbishop of Nicaea. He received his episcopal consecration, Eugenio Cardinal Secretary of State Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII. 1934 Pizzardo was put in charge of the Pontifical Commission for Russia. 1936 Pius XI appointed him. Assistant to the Pontifical Throne, 1937, he sent him as papal legate for the coronation of King George VI. to the UK. On 13 December 1937, he took it as a cardinal priest per hac vice with the title of Santa Maria in Via Lata diakonia in the College of Cardinals to. After his death, Cardinal Pizzardo participated in the conclave of 1939. Pope Pius XII. appointed Giuseppe Pizzardo 1939 Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Seminaries and Universities. In 1948 he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Albano. From 1951 to 1959 he was secretary of the Holy Office. Cardinal Pizzardo took part in the conclave in 1958, and the conclave in 1963. He died on 1 August 1970 in Rome and was buried in the Church of Saint Joseph in Frattocchie di Marino near the Italian capital. At the time of his death he was the oldest cardinal of the world.
