Giuseppe Valentini

Giuseppe Valentini (* December 14, 1681 in Florence, † November 1753 in Rome) was an Italian composer and violinist.

Life

Giuseppe Valentini was among other things a pupil of Giovanni Battista Bononcini, when he worked in Rome 1690-1696. Valentini had important musical functions in many churches. Based on stories of the aging Francesco Geminiani, Charles Burney mentioned him as a bitter rival Arcangelo Corelli.

At the age of 11 years Valentini was a member of the Congregation of S. Cecilia, whose secretary he was from 1695. In 1694 he was first mentioned as a violinist when he was in the service of Cardinal Colonna. At the concerts of the Academia del disegno di San Luca and the court of the music-loving Cardinal Ottoboni he was influenced by Corelli. From 1710 to 1727 Valentini was as " Suonator di Violino, e Compositore di Musica " at Prince Michelangelo Caetani I. ( 1685-1759 ), where in 1714 Pietro Antonio Locatelli was also employed as a violinist. He was also coadiutore del maestro di cappella at S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli.

From 1718 Valentini worked for 30 years as a violinist and composer at the Collegio Nazareno, at the same time he was at Santa Maria Maggiore, where he was Kapellmeister in the Cappella Borghese from 1736. As the successor of Giuseppe Zipoli he was from 1720 to 1753 director of music at St. Mary Magdalene.

The compositions of the partially freelance musician found quickly spread across Europe. Several collections of works were printed, as there are numerous manuscripts in the libraries of Manchester, Dresden and Rome. Since the last decades of the 20th century, his works have been rediscovered and listed after Valentini was almost completely forgotten. They are characterized by some innovation, as he tries originality and surprising musical ideas to captivate his audience. As a virtuoso Valentini occupies an important position in the history of violin playing.

About his musical activity addition, the multi-talented Valentini operated as a painter and poet.
