Gjógv

Við Gjógv [ ʤɛgv ] (literally: [ in ] crevice, Danish: Gjov ) is a place of the Faroe Islands on the northeast coast Eysturoys.

Gjógv is the Faroese word for crevice. The place has the name in which a small natural harbor is from the crevice.

History and Sights

The school dates from 1884 and the church of 1929. The church went into the history of the Faroe Islands, when it was consecrated as the first church in the country in Faroese language on May 26, 1929. The provost Jákup Dahl gave this unique statement because it was a general desire of the population at that time. The church is also the first church in this place. Previously, people had to walk to church services by Funningur. The corresponding road was built only in 1960.

Near the church is located - as in many other towns in the Faroe Islands - a small park with a monument to the fishermen died at sea. Their names are listed on the attached plaques in the park. The bronze monument was created in 1971 by Fridtjof Joensen ( 1920-88 ), one of the most important artists of the 20th century Faroese created.

On 22 June 2005, the village of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary was visited, where the famous opera singer Rúni Brattaberg sang for them.
