Glaine-Montaigut

Glaine - Montaigut is a commune in the Auvergne region in the Puy -de- Dôme in the arrondissement of Clermont -Ferrand and one of the ten municipalities of the canton Billom.

The municipality covers 12.92 square kilometers at 326-531 m above sea level with 530 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It is located 25 kilometers east of Clermont -Ferrand and 6 km northeast of Billom. The name of the village is reminiscent of the old parish of Saint -Jean -de- Glaine and the castle Montaigut- Listenois.

Origins

The present village Glaine - Montaigut said in Gallo- Roman times Glannius, in the 11th century Gladinas, in the 16th century Gleygnes, in the 18th century Saint -Jean de Glanes, it was in the time of the Revolution Glaine - Montaigut, by merging with the village Montaigut which is 2 km above the town center. Today one can still recognize important ruins of the Château Montaigut- Listenois, the former headquarters of a large family, who had great influence in the Middle Ages.
