Glevum

Glevum was a Roman city in the province of Britannia ( Britain), at the site of the present city of Gloucester in the county of Gloucestershire in England. Glevum had the status of a Colonia. Her full name was Colonia Nervia Glevensium. As the name implies, the city was raised under Nerva ( 96-98 ) to the colony.

History

In the area of ​​the later city of a military camp was built around 49 AD. There is a dispute about which legion was stationed there. From AD 67, a new warehouse was built just south. This took up an area of 17.4 hectares. After the Legion was stripped off, the place was elevated to a colony.

The plan of the camp was maintained, transformed the walls of the city walls. The old Principia in the middle of the city were rebuilt to a forum with a basilica. Other public buildings have not yet been localized with certainty. To the north, however, there was a colonnade, which must have belonged to a larger building.

During the second century the military barracks were replaced by stone buildings made ​​of wood. To the west of the city a large peristyle could be excavated. In the urban area so far found 41 mosaics. Most of them decorated with geometric patterns.

At the end of the second century the city wall was expanded, especially were now attached to the inside of the wall towers. Outside the walls there were extensive suburbs. Especially in the north, there were some important buildings. This district may go back to the old Canabae.

There is evidence that the place was inhabited without interruption until the fifth century. In the year 577, the city said to have been captured at the Battle of Deorham.
