Gliese 86 b

Gliese 86 b and Gliese 86 Ab ( to better distinguish it from the double star partner Gliese 86 B of the primary star Gliese 86 A) or short also Eq 86 Ab is a extrasolar planet approximately 35 light-years away from our solar system and is located in the constellation Eridanus.

The planet was discovered by the K- dwarf star Gliese 86 A in November 1998 by a French team of researchers at ESO. It orbits its parent star very close and ended an orbit already in 15 days 18 hours and 15 minutes.

First astrometric investigations by the Hipparcos satellite designed to the conclusion that the planet has an inclination of about 164 ° and a mass of more than 15 Jupiter masses, which would have made him a brown dwarf.

Further analysis showed, however, that the measurement data from Hipparcos are not accurate enough to obtain reliable by him astrometric data sub-stellar objects.

The measurement results of the radial velocities of Gliese 86 A show a linear trend when the influence of the planet Eq deducts 86 Ab, an indication of physical coupling with his companion to the white dwarf Gliese 86 B.
