Globus pharyngis
The Globus syndrome or globus sensation (lat. globe globe hystericus or pharyngeal ) is mainly characterized by the feeling of having a lump in the throat when swallowing otherwise unobstructed and possibly being able to breathe worse.
In a globe syndrome swallowing of saliva or the empty swallowing is uncomfortable or painful breathing can be perceived as difficult and exhausting. A compulsion to clear his throat and slight dysphonia may also exist.
Diagnostics
For the clarification of physical ( organic ) causes an examination of the internal and external carotid bodies is required:
Endoscopic examination of the throat ( pharynx ), larynx ( larynx ) and the windpipe ( trachea) to organic causes such as particularly inflammation, benign or malignant tumors or foreign bodies. A reflux of stomach acid (gastroesophageal reflux disease / gastric laryngitis ) may cause these symptoms. About an X-ray examination of the exclusion of osteochondrosis of the cervical spine and an elongated styloid process (lat. styloid process ) of the temporal bone with a resultant Styalgie is possible. Other possible causes are tension in the neck muscles, scarring after neck surgery and enlargements / node of the thyroid (eg goiter).
The globus sensation is a frequent companion of voice disorders ( dysphonia ).
In unclear swallowing should Röntgenkinematografie ( Röntgenvideografie ) - a Ösophagusdarstellung - are performed during act of swallowing.
After ruling out organic reasons for the globus sensation is to psychosomatic causes such as Stress or to think of a somatized depression.
