Gloeocapsa

Gloeocapsa is a genus of the tribe of cyanobacteria ( blue-green algae ).

Description

Gloeocapsa forms groups of small, roundish to oval cells lacking as with all Cyanokakterien nucleus and plastids. The cells may be greenish, bluish or reddish to violet. To individual or in groups lying cells are located in concentric layering wide, blistered swollen jelly coat. The shells can accept by incorporation of pigments, yellow, brownish, orange or violet color, which serves the UV protection.

Reproduction

Asexual reproduction occurs by cell division with three mutually perpendicular planes of division; Zellagregate can fragment.

Sexual reproduction is absent in all cyanobacteria.

Types (selection)

  • Gloeocapsa atrata
  • Gloeocapsa coracina
  • Gloeocapsa insignis
  • Gloeocapsa opaca
  • Gloeocapsa sanguinea
  • Gloeocapsa thermalis

Dissemination

Gloeocapsa living planktonic and benthic in lakes, and on damp substrates aerophytischen as wood, stones ( which can be decomposed ) or mosses, but also in hot springs. The cyanobacteria may also occur as a partner in lichen symbioses.
