Gloria Lynne

Gloria Lynne ( born November 23, 1931 in New York City as Gloria Alleyne, † October 15, 2013 in Newark ( New Jersey)) was an American soul and jazz singer.

Life and work

Lynne, whose mother was a gospel singer, sang as a girl in Harlem in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Choir. In 1951, she was discovered at a competition at the Apollo Theater. In the next few years she sang occasionally with Quincy Jones, Bobby Timmons, Philly Joe Jones and Harry Sweets Edison and was among the vocal groups The Enchanters and The Dell Tones, with whom she recorded also. In 1958 she was awarded a solo contract with Everest, for she recorded ten albums over the next five years. Then she moved to Fontana Records, where she recorded more albums in the range of soul, pop and jazz. She had success with songs like "June Night", "Love I Found You " and hits with " I Wish You Love " (1964) and " I'm Glad There Is You". For some songs that she performed, she wrote lyrics, especially for " Watermelon Man " ( which she in an arrangement by Al Cohn box office ), and for Kenny Burrell's " All Day Long".

In the next few years she performed the opening act for Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstine, but took place in the 1970s, hardly any performance opportunities; In 1975, she was able to import one more album for ABC. It was only in the 1980s, she managed to rejoin their careers. Since 1989, she released more albums at Muse Records; in the 1990s was their song "Speaking of Happiness" in the movies ( ( Red Rock West) ) and Seven and U-Turn - No way back and used for a car commercial. In 2007, she put her most recent album, From My Heart to Yours at High Note before; also she has performed with Billy Taylor on the television. In 2009, she was on tour in Europe. Together with Karen Chilton she wrote her autobiography I Wish You Love: A Riveting Memoir From One of the Leading Ladies of Jazz, published by Macmillan in 2001.

Prizes and awards

The City of New York committed 25 July 1995 as Gloria Lynne Day. In 1996 Lynne the International Women of Jazz Award; in the following year she was honored with the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. She died in October 2013 in Columbus Rehabilitation Center in Newark (New Jersey) to a heart attack.
