Glory (optical phenomenon)

A glory (of glory ) is a light phenomenon by backscattering of light by finely divided, spherical droplets such as fog or clouds. Here a round, bright area surrounding the shadow of the observer. The head of the observer is located in the center of the bright area. This gives an impression similar to that of the saints in icons. The bright area is offset by a colored ring of light from the environment.

Unlike a Halo non-solid ice crystals, but liquid drops are involved in a glory.

Glories can be seen in fog and the sun is low. In thin mist they are often accompanied by a specter of the Brocken. The shadow of an airplane that breaks through a cloud layer deep, is also often surrounded by a halo.

A similar light phenomenon is the halo, the cause of which are seated on plants dew drops. Unlike the glory of the halo is not surrounded by a colored stripe.
