Glycera (courtesan)

Glycera was a famous native of Athens courtesan the second half of the 4th century BC

After the death of Pythionike ( between 329 BC and 324 BC) brought her Harpalus, the administrator appointed by Alexander the Great Babylon, according to Tarsus. Here he held Glycera at the expense of the state treasury. He arranged for them to royal honor, which led to ridicule and resentment among the Greeks. Through their mediation Harpalus sent grain to Athens, which earned him the Athenian citizenship in return. Glycera accompanied Harpalus in his flight before returning from India Alexander to Athens. There it remained, even after Harpalus had to leave the city, and was allegedly the mistress of the poet Menander.
