Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Süßhölzer (Glycyrrhiza ) is the only genus of the subtribe Glycyrrhizinae in the subfamily of the Fabaceae ( Faboideae ) within the legume family ( Fabaceae ). To her are about 20 to 30 species that are native to the Mediterranean region, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Description

Süßhölzer are perennial herbaceous plants. The alternate, unpaired pinnate leaves have three to fifteen leaflets. The stipules are tiny.

In axillary, racemose inflorescences are aged men or small butterfly-shaped flowers and small bracts together. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic. The five sepals are fused bell-shaped. Of the calyx lobes has the lower two short calyx teeth and the upper three long calyx teeth. The five petals are usually yellow or blue. The wings are shorter than the boat.

There are formed pulses which contain one or several seeds.

From the roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra Liquorice is obtained. It can also be used for smoking cessation. From the root of Glycyrrhiza inflata the licochalcone A flavonoid can be obtained.

In Germany licorice was formerly grown in different regions especially in the south, but the cultivation declined sharply and is now operated only by individual private citizens and in Bamberg Bamberg's Licorice Company.

The tobacco law allows the addition of licorice to tobacco products.
